Operation Fortune (2023)

Should Orson choose to accept it, the task is to track down a stolen briefcase that contains a mysterious object about to be sold on the black market, the shady underworld of arms dealers, drug runners, state secrets, and other nefarious transactions. Nobody knows what's in the briefcase, but whatever it is is so dangerous it must not get into the wrong hands. (The mystery of what's in the briefcase is not revealed until halfway through the film. This is meant to be suspenseful but has the opposite effect.) Orson puts together his small team: J.J. Davies (Bugzy Malone), who spends a lot of time staring at GPS screens and reporting locations, and Sara Fidel (Aubrey Plaza), a computer expert who can hack into anything. Their first operation is infiltrating an extremely elite party hosted by billionaire George Simonds (Hugh Grant) on his yacht. Simonds hangs out with a very sketchy group, including two creeps in \"biotech\" and a roving band of drunken thieves, all of whom also want the briefcase.
Even though a pandemic, a war, production company woes, iffy marketing, and a stacked theatrical slate have all at one point or another stood between \"Operation Fortune\" and any measure of success, it's worth noting that the movie itself may not actually be bad. In his review for /Film, Evangelista called it \"a bright, sunny, occasionally funny spy movie with a few ultra-stylish action scenes,\" despite some hit-or-miss humor. With no American home video release date in sight yet, your best bet for watching \"Operation Fortune\" is still in theaters, although with its low returns, it doesn't seem likely it'll be held over for long. After a bumpy ride to American audiences, Ritchie's latest operation seems destined to fail.
On the quest to recovery, Orson and his crew aim to infiltrate the operation of a bombastic arms dealer (Hugh Grant) by using an arrogant movie star (Josh Hartnett) as their cover. It's a fun idea that might have allowed for some skewering of Hollywood culture alongside spy spectacle. But the painfully flimsy script treats its satire potential as a hazy afterthought, mostly using the movie star's ego as a punching bag.
